Spider veins are small clusters of red, blue, or purple veins that appear most commonly on the thighs, calves, and ankles. They are very similar to varicose veins, but smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. Spider veins can look like tree branches or spider webs with their short jagged lines. Although they are usually found on the legs, they can also be found on the faceand can sometimes cover other skin areas.
A number of factors may contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs, including:
- Hormonal shifts
- Exposure to the Sun
- Weight gain
Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
NOTE: Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can be flesh colored, dark purple, or blue. They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging. Usually, they are swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. These veins cannot typically be treated with laser. If you have questions regarding any veins, you may ask Dr. Lewen during your consultation.
Laser Vein Treatments are commonly performed in the office in less than 30 minutes, although this varies depending on the size of the area being treated. It is a relatively painless and comfortable procedure. Although it may take additional sessions to reach your complete aesthetic goals, you will notice significant improvement in the appearance of your veins after just 1 session.
Every patient heals at a different rate. There is no restriction on activity after Laser Vein Treatments and you will be encouraged to walk. The treated sites may appear slightly bruised and/or somewhat swollen within the first 1-2 weeks, but this varies greatly with the individual being treated. Dr. Lewen will customize your treatments to best suit your cosmetic goals.
