BOTOX® is a prescription medication that is injected into the muscles of facial expression to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles to form. It is commonly injected into the frown lines in between the brows to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. Dr. Lewen administers BOTOX® in the office as a simple, relatively painless procedure.
- BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002 to treat frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).
- BOTOX® Cosmetic is very commonly used “off-label” to treat other areas such as Crow’s feet, forehead lines, around the mouth, neck bands, underarms, and hands.
Dr. Lewen takes the time to customize all treatments to the individual patient to ensure that personal cosmetic goals are met appropriately.
Results are typically seen in 3-5 days and usually last from 3-6 months. There is essentially no downtime. Bruising is rare, but can occur, particularly if you take Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Motrin, Advil, etc.), or any other blood thinners. BOTOX® injections are generally a safe treatment when administered by a licensed and trained healthcare provider and side effects of this medication are extremely rare. If you have any concerns regarding the use of BOTOX®, Dr. Lewen will address your concerns during consultation.
Who can do Botox?BOTOX® Cosmetic injections may be indicated to treat various conditions for patients who are over the age of 18 years. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are not recommended for patients who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
What does Botox do?BOTOX® Cosmetic works by targeting one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Dr. Lewen will inject the muscles in these areas with BOTOX® Cosmetic to temporarily soften muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and the frown lines in between your brows within 3-5 days. Dr. Lewen also frequently uses delicate and specifically-placed BOTOX® Cosmetic to effectively lift the brows. This “Botox brow lift” will create more space in the upper eyelid area, and will commonly give the appearance of opening up your eyes. Dr. Lewen is also well-versed in many advanced injection techniques for BOTOX® Cosmetic. For certain patients, he will use very selective doses to achieve excellent results with other procedures such as facial slimming, pore reduction, and the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the hands, feet, or underarms.
When should I get Botox? When does it start working?BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are easily performed in the office setting with essentially no downtime. The actual procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes and is virtually painless. Typically, the areas of injection will show some immediate redness and swelling that is frequently gone minutes later by the time you are ready to leave the office. Bruising is rare, but can occur, particularly if you take Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Motrin, Advil, etc.), or any other blood thinners. The majority of people are able to go back to most of their normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. The results from the procedure are typically seen to start taking effect in about 3-5 days, with full results in about 1-2 weeks. The results will typically last from 3-6 months.
Where is Botox injected?Dr. Lewen consults with each patient individually to construct your optimum treatment plan, and he will review your cosmetic concerns at that time. Depending on your individual facial structure and form, as well as your cosmetic goals, Dr. Lewen will decide where you will have the most benefit from placing precise injections of BOTOX®. Some of the most common areas that are treated are in between the brows, in the crow’s feet areas near the corners of the eyes where smile lines can form, and across the forehead. For some patients and specific conditions, Dr. Lewen may also place BOTOX® injections in other areas of the face and body in order to achieve various effects.

How much does Botox cost? The cost of receiving injections of BOTOX® does not just include the cost of the actual product. Unfortunately, this is an error that is made by many people when considering the cost of this treatment, and it can be very dangerous to consider where to have cosmetic treatments such as BOTOX® injections performed based solely on the cost.
The cost of BOTOX® most importantly incorporates the level of skill and expertise of the injector. There are many people who perform BOTOX® injections without ever receiving the proper training on the anatomy and physiology of the face. Some injectors will simply attend weekend courses before starting to inject patients with BOTOX®, while others may not even have the proper license, appropriate credentials, or required oversight to legally perform these treatments.
When a US specialist purchases BOTOX® Cosmetic through Allergan or a distributor authorized by Allergan, it is guaranteed for quality. Unfortunately, there are some injectors who purchase BOTOX® Cosmetic from other sources inside or outside of the country in order to save money on the cost of the product. BOTOX® Cosmetic that is purchased from non-reputable sources is not regulated by the FDA, and is not always controlled for proper storage conditions or expiration. Such BOTOX® Cosmetic will typically be offered to patients much cheaper. Lastly, BOTOX® Cosmetic requires re-constitution prior to injection. Some injectors will intentionally dilute the product before treating patients in order to save money.
Above all else, you should only seek treatment for cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic with reputable injectors who are licensed, appropriately-trained, and highly skilled in performing the specific procedure you are considering.
At Lewen Cosmetic Center the cost of treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic is $15/ unit. Dr. Lewen customizes each treatment and the number of units used in each specific area of the face to the individual patient. This customization is based on your specific anatomy and facial muscle function, the shape of your face, your individual cosmetic goals, and his extensive experience in performing these cosmetic treatments.
