Restylane® is an injectable gel that is FDA-approved to instantly smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as smile lines, nasolabial folds (the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth), the corners of the mouth, and marionette lines (the lines that extend downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline). Restylane® may also be used for lip enhancement to add more fullness and plump thin lips, whether your lips have thinned somewhat over time, or even if you just want fuller lips. The results from injection of these products have been shown to last from 6 months up to 1 year, depending on the area that is treated, the specific product(s) used, and the individual patient. Restylane® was first approved for intradermal injection in the United States in 2003.
The products in this family of injectable facial fillers include:
- Restylane® Silk
- Restylane® Lyft with Lidocaine
All of these products use NASHA technology, which gives each product a unique particle size that is tailored for specific treatments. These products have also been shown to have a greater lifting capacity than some other products, and they tend to hold their form well after being injected into the body.
Restylane® is an injectable gel that is FDA-approved to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. This helps to create softer and smoother lines of facial expression, and ultimately a more youthful appearance. The results from injection of this product have been shown to last from 6 months up to 1 year. It was also approved to be used as an injection for lip enhancement in 2011.
Restylane-L® was approved for use in the United States in 2012. The “L” designation refers to the presence of lidocaine that is mixed into this product. This has the added benefit of providing some anesthesia and additional comfort when this product is injected into the body.
Restylane® Silk is an injectable gel that is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and the smoothing of wrinkles and lines around the mouth. This product was specifically designed to treat thinning of the lips, loss of lip shape, and vertical lines above the lip. The product produces natural-appearing results in particular areas by using smaller, smoother hyaluronic acid particles than those in other Restylane® products. The results from injection of this product have been shown to last for 6 months or more. It was approved for injection in the lips and around the mouth in the United States in June 2014.
Restylane® Lyft with Lidocaine is an injectable gel that is FDA-approved for cheek augmentation and the correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies. It is also approved for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds. The results from injection of this product have been shown to last up to 1 year. It was approved for injection for cheek augmentation, and to treat midface contour irregularities in the United States in July 2015. Restylane® Lyft was previously known as Perlane®, which was already approved for correcting moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds in the United States in 2007.
All Restylane® products are composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a modified sugar molecule, and a naturally-occurring substance that is found in the body in places such as skin, connective tissue, and joints. This molecule is ubiquitous across all species and does not require skin allergy testing prior to injection.
Generally, the side effects of these products are mild and short-lived. The most common side effects after injection include redness, tenderness, swelling, and bruising, although there are other, more serious side effects that have been reported in rare cases. The degree of redness, tenderness, swelling, and bruising after injection of these products can vary greatly depending on the specific location of injection, the technique and experience of the injector, and individual patient factors. The results from the injection of these products can be seen almost immediately, although some degree of initial swelling is expected, and typically the results will settle in over the first 1-2 weeks after the treatment is performed. Results after injection of Restylane® products typically last at least 6 months, and often up to 1 year or longer, depending on the specific product, the individual patient, and the location of injection.
