The middle third of the face often develops signs of aging before other areas of the face. This includes the cheeks and eyes. In these cases, patients may not need a full facelift, as the surgery is considered too extensive given the limitations of the problem areas. A mid-facelift is often the best option to target the middle portion of the face.
For individuals with sagging cheeks, but not jowls or banding of the neck, a mid-facelift may be the best solution. If the mid-face (the soft tissue pad of the cheek) has dropped, this may produce the appearance of having sunken cheeks and deep folds between the nose and the mouth, called nasolabial folds.
Mid-face lifts may often be performed with very small incisions hidden in such areas as in the corners of the eyelids. In some cases, Dr. Lewen may perform this procedure endoscopically.
The new “vertical facelift” or mid-face lift offers an effective alternative in appropriate cases to the traditional facelift with less overall surgery and downtime.
A mid-facelift is a more permanent option for people who are not seeing their desired results from other, more conservative, surgical, and non-surgical treatment options.
Although the mid-facelift is less extensive than a traditional facelift, patients should prepare for a recovery period of at least two weeks. Sutures are removed after seven to 10 days. Swelling and bruising typically take several weeks to resolve. Dr. Lewen recommends that his patients rest at home for at least two weeks and avoid strenuous activities, such as lifting and exercise, for at least three weeks. This timeline does vary by patient, so patients should adhere to the post-operative and follow-up instructions provided by Dr. Lewen during the recovery period.
