BOTOX® & Wrinkle Relaxers

Botox® is a prescription medication that is injected into the muscles of facial expression to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles to form. It is commonly injected into the frown lines in between the brows and other lines of facial expression in the crow’s feet areas and across the forehead to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles. For some patients, Dr. Lewen also does Botox® injections to create a non-surgical brow lifting effect. If you are frequently bothered by frown lines or other wrinkles on your face, you may be a good candidate for Botox® injections. Dr. Lewen is a double board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon with specific training on the anatomy and function of the muscles of facial expression around the eyes and the face. Dr. Lewen uses his advanced training, knowledge, and precision techniques to tailor his Botox® treatments specifically to achieve the best cosmetic results for his patients.

Botox® works by targeting one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Dr. Lewen will inject the muscles in these areas with Botox® to temporarily soften muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and the frown lines in between your brows within three to five days. Dr. Lewen also frequently uses delicate and specifically placed Botox® to effectively lift the brows. This “Botox® brow lift” will create more space in the upper eyelid area, and will commonly give the appearance of opening up your eyes. Dr. Lewen is also well-versed in many advanced injection techniques for Botox®. For certain patients, he will use very selective doses to achieve excellent results with other procedures such as facial slimming, pore reduction, and the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the hands, feet, or underarm

Botox® injections may be indicated to treat various conditions for patients who are over the age of 18 years. Botox® injections are not recommended for patients who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Botox® injections are easily performed in the office setting with little to no downtime. The actual procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes and is virtually painless. Typically, the areas of injection will show some immediate redness and swelling that is frequently gone minutes later by the time you are ready to leave the office.

Dr. Lewen consults with each patient individually to construct your optimum treatment plan, and he will review your cosmetic concerns at that time. Depending on your individual facial structure and form, as well as your cosmetic goals, Dr. Lewen will decide where you will have the most benefit from placing precise injections of Botox®. Some of the most common areas that are treated are in between the brows, in the crow’s feet areas near the corners of the eyes where smile lines can form, and across the forehead. For some patients and specific conditions, Dr. Lewen may also place Botox® injections in other areas of the face and body in order to achieve various effects.

The majority of people are able to go back to most of their normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. The results from the procedure are typically seen to start taking effect in about three to five days, with full results in about one to two weeks. The results will typically last from three to six months.There is little to no downtime. Bruising is rare, but can occur, particularly if you take aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Motrin, Advil, etc.), or any other blood thinners. Botox® injections are generally a safe treatment when administered by a licensed and trained healthcare provider and side effects of this medication are extremely rare. The results of Dysport® treatments may take a few days. In most patients, Dysport® injections produce results that last four to six months.

Generally speaking, the side effects of Dysport® are relatively minor. Tenderness and swelling at the injection sites are the most common concerns among patients.

The results from Xeomin® injections may take a few days. Results last four to six months.

You may experience some minor symptoms, such as tenderness and swelling. The symptoms are localized around the injection sites and last only one to two days. Little to no downtime is needed with Xeomin® injections.
