In this day and age, it’s hard to find a woman who hasn’t already learned some of the tricks of facial contouring. The common goals here are to highlight the eyes and the cheekbones, sometimes the lips as well, and to slim or contour the jawline. Many women can achieve some of these enhancements through the skillful application of make-up, the injection of dermal fillers, the use of photo editing apps, or some combination of these techniques. There is now another trend taking place to assist with facial contouring, and many women are requesting Botox for facial sculpting.
The technique of injecting Botox into the masseter muscles, the redundant, bulky muscles that are used to clench on the lower outside of your jaw, is not a new treatment. It has been performed for years to help those who suffer from jaw joint pain (TMJ). Much like other muscles of the body, the masseter muscles tend to become hypertrophied (larger) when they are “worked out,” and this can create the appearance of a thicker, squarer, boxier, and less feminine jawline. This can particularly be an issue for people who have more “type A” personalities, high-stress jobs and lifestyles, or those who have chronic issues with grinding their teeth in their sleep. In recent years, carefully placed Botox injections into the masseter muscles have been shown to demonstrate a significant facial slimming effect. This procedure is now gaining in popularity and is being requested more often by women who have come to learn of this non-invasive option that can help to give them a more feminine, heart-shaped face, along with a defined, slimmer jawline. Especially beneficial for those women who may have a genetic predisposition to a fuller facial appearance or a square jawline, this treatment is very effective in softening some of these features and adjusting to a balance of more feminine facial proportions.
So how does the treatment work? Botox is skillfully injected into a few specific points of the masseter muscles to temporarily relax these muscles. Over time, and with continuing treatments, relaxed muscles that are no longer overworked will begin to decrease in size and appear less bulky. As a result, the jawline will become more defined, and often look slimmer in appearance. This will cause the balance of the face to shift slightly, often also causing the cheek bones to look somewhat more pronounced, and creating more of a classic, attractive, heart shape to the face. The procedure is quick, painless, and produces a naturally subtle result with no downtime in most cases. Results are frequently noticeable within a month of the initial treatment, although additional treatments may be required to obtain the best possible result, depending on the individual patient. For most people, the average Botox treatment will last for 3-4 months, although in some cases, treatments can last up to 6 months.
