What is Reconstructive Surgery?
Reconstructive surgery, also known as functional surgery, is a surgical specialty that focuses primarily on restoring function of specific anatomical structures. Whereas cosmetic surgery primarily involves improving aesthetics of the features, functional surgery is considered more of a medical necessity to help the patient perform daily activities and/or prevent complications.
- Droopy eyelid surgery
- Reconstruction after Mohs surgery
- Ectropion/entropion repair surgery
- Eyelid facial reconstruction and trauma
- Lump/bump on eyelid
- Surgery for tearing disorders
- Surgery for advanced thyroid conditions
What Are the Benefits of Functional Surgery?
Dr. Lewen recommends reconstructive surgery if his consultation and examination reveal that the patient is suffering or may suffer complications due to anatomical abnormalities, improper healing, poor results from a previous surgery or trauma, and similar situations. The goal of functional surgery is to improve the tissues from a functional, rather than aesthetic, standpoint.
What Are the Benefits of Working with an Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon?
As an oculofacial plastic surgeon, Dr. Lewen is uniquely qualified to understand how to modify the tissues to enhance function, as well as the techniques to use to reduce the potential for complications. General plastic surgeons can perform functional surgery, yet Dr. Lewen is one of the few plastic surgeons who specializes in oculofacial plastic surgery and has the expertise needed to maximize patient outcomes.
